Total Knee Replacement · TKR

Rebuilding alignment. Restoring confident movement.

Total knee replacement reconstructs severely damaged joint surfaces using carefully selected implant components. The decision to operate is based on the diagnosis, symptoms, joint damage, function and the individual goals of each patient.

The Surgical Decision

Knee replacement starts with the right indication.

Surgery may be considered when significant knee damage is associated with persistent pain and functional limitation, and appropriate non-surgical treatment is no longer providing sufficient control.

01
Symptoms Persistent pain and stiffness are considered in the clinical assessment.
02
Imaging Imaging helps define structural damage and the condition of the joint.
03
Function Walking, stairs and everyday mobility form part of the decision.
04
Previous Treatment The response to appropriate non-surgical treatment also matters.
Understanding TKR

The damaged surfaces are replaced — not the entire knee.

Total knee replacement reconstructs the joint surfaces using implant components positioned on the lower femur and upper tibia, with a bearing surface between them.

Knee Replacement in Motion
01 Femoral Component Reconstructs the damaged surface at the lower end of the femur.
02 Bearing Surface Forms the moving interface between the implant components.
03 Tibial Component Reconstructs the upper surface of the tibia.

Planning & Precision

The reconstruction is planned before it is performed.

Total knee replacement involves decisions about component size, position, limb alignment, fixation, joint stability and soft-tissue balance.

Implant Size Selected according to patient anatomy.
Component Position Position forms part of the operative plan.
Limb Alignment Alignment is assessed during reconstruction.
Stability & Balance Soft-tissue balance is evaluated during surgery.

Advanced Surgical Planning

Robotic-assisted knee replacement.

Robotic-assisted technology can support selected knee replacement procedures by providing additional anatomical information for surgical planning, bone preparation and implant positioning.

01
Patient Anatomy Planning can incorporate patient-specific anatomical information into the operative plan.
02
Bone Preparation Technology can support planned and controlled bone preparation during the procedure.
03
Implant Position Positioning information can support execution of the planned implant configuration.
04
Alignment & Balance Alignment and joint information can be assessed as part of the operative plan.
Robotic assistance supports surgical planning and execution; it does not independently perform the operation. Dr. Gadallah remains responsible for the surgical procedure and all clinical decisions. Availability may depend on the surgical plan and hospital.

Your Surgical Pathway

From assessment to recovery.

Knee replacement is a process rather than a single event. Assessment, preparation, surgery, early mobility, rehabilitation and follow-up each form part of the pathway.

01
Assessment Diagnosis, examination and imaging.
02
Preparation Medical preparation and surgical planning.
03
Surgery Damaged surfaces are reconstructed.
04
Early Mobility Movement progresses according to the plan.
05
Rehabilitation Motion, strength and function progress.
06
Follow-Up Recovery is monitored after surgery.

After Surgery

Recovery progresses step by step.

Rehabilitation after total knee replacement focuses on progressive mobility, knee movement, strength and return to function. The exact pathway is individualized according to the patient, procedure and rehabilitation progress.

Mobility Beginning safe movement.
Motion Progressing knee movement.
Strength Rebuilding muscular control.
Function Returning toward daily activity.
Recovery timelines vary between patients. Progression is guided according to the individual surgical and clinical situation.
Safety & Informed Decision-Making

A balanced decision includes benefits, limitations & risks.

Total knee replacement is a major operation. The expected benefits and relevant risks should be considered together before proceeding.

What Surgery Aims to Address

Function after a damaged knee.

01
Pain Replacement aims to address pain arising from severely damaged joint surfaces.
02
Mobility The reconstruction is planned to support functional movement.
03
Daily Function Recovery focuses on returning toward useful everyday activity.
What We Discuss Before Surgery

Relevant surgical considerations.

Infection Blood Clots Stiffness Bleeding Implant-Related Problems Anaesthetic / Medical Risks

Individual risk varies according to general health, medical history, the condition of the knee and the surgical situation. Relevant risks and expected benefits are discussed during pre-operative assessment.

Common Questions

Understanding knee replacement.

When should total knee replacement be considered? +
Total knee replacement may be considered when significant knee damage causes persistent pain and functional limitation and appropriate non-surgical treatment is no longer providing sufficient control. The decision is individualized.
What exactly is replaced during total knee replacement? +
Damaged joint surfaces are prepared and reconstructed with implant components on the femoral and tibial sides of the knee, with a bearing surface between them. The entire knee is not simply removed.
How is the implant selected? +
Implant selection and sizing depend on factors including anatomy, bone quality, the condition of the knee and operative requirements.
What is robotic-assisted knee replacement? +
Robotic-assisted systems can provide additional information to support surgical planning and selected parts of operative execution, including bone preparation and implant positioning. The surgeon remains responsible for the operation and clinical decisions.
When can I begin walking after surgery? +
Early mobility commonly forms part of postoperative care, but the timing and level of activity depend on the individual patient, procedure and clinical condition.
How long does recovery take? +
Recovery is gradual and varies between patients. Progress depends on the procedure, general health, rehabilitation, strength and functional goals.
How long can a knee replacement last? +
Modern implants are designed for long-term use, but no implant has a guaranteed lifespan. Longevity varies according to the implant, fixation, activity and individual patient factors.
